"Spongeware" refers to the way the stoneware was decorated. Blue glaze was applied over a White (Bristol) glaze with a rag or a sponge. Spongeware is made of the same heavy Yellow clay as all of the Blue and White Stoneware. In fact, many of the embossed pieces found more commonly in the defused blue color were also decorated with Blue Sponge. Garden Rose, Cosmos, and Girl and Dog are most commonly seen but many other patterns have been found with sponge decoration..
